by admin on January 16, 2012

If you are lucky enough to have a wedding to look forward to this year, we’re here to help. The latest bi-annual New York Bridal Fashion Week has given us plenty of hints as to the major wedding shoe trends for the year ahead, and we have some sensational shoe treats for you. If you’ve yet to pick out that perfect pair for the big day, our guide to the key trends is here to help you get started.

Luxurious textures

The international fashion week catwalks showed a real shift towards luxurious fabrics and textures for this year, and NY Bridal Fashion Week was no different. Rich textures that ooze elegance, sophistication and luxury are key, offering up a stark contrast to the fast fashion age we now live in. So look for fabulous finishes and high quality fabrics like sumptuous velvet, sleek silk, and vibrant satin. These gorgeous satin shoes (pictured) from House of Fraser sum it up perfectly.

All natural

Another key trend for the year ahead that offers an alternative to the fast fashion world is the emphasis on all natural materials. Cheap and cheerful synthetics have had their day and designers are looking to traditional materials to construct their cutting edge heels this year. This means wood, cork, rope – anything organic.

Statement soles and heels

While the past few years have seen a major return for platform soled shoes, they tend to have been concealed platforms. At the moment platforms are still a major look, only this year designers are keen to show them off rather than conceal them. Look for shoes that have a contrasting platform sole and heel. This trend really makes the most of luxury fabrics too, with trendsetting footwear gurus like Christian Louboutin showcasing a collection that mixed velvet uppers with leopard print heels and sumptuous satin uppers with patent leather soles. Statement soles and heels are a great way to work in the spring/summer colour block trend too.

Laser cut shoes

The NY Bridal Fashion Week runways were brimming with one very modern fabric – laser cut. Using lasers to cut incredibly intricate patterns, usually floral, into fabrics, this cutting edge technique gave us a fresh new alternative to traditional bridal lace. Now the technique has been embraced by shoe designers too, so you can incorporate the trend into your own wedding footwear.

If you’re looking for further on-trend inspiration for the big day, Barneys New York Fashion Director Amanda Brooks has put together a great round up of the key footwear trends in her piece for Women’s Wear Daily, here. Happy shoe shopping!
