People who are invited to weddings should dress age-appropriately, but this can sometimes be a challenge, especially when it comes to shopping for elderly wedding outfits. Babies, toddlers and young children can usually find what they need at a local department store, with a good selection of special occasion outfits, keeping the costs low. Teenagers and young adults may find that they have to go to specialty shops, carrying more formal wear which can augment the costs. Adults of all ages can find it a bit of a challenge to purchase something that isn’t considered “cute” or “gaudy” to attend a special occasion like a wedding.
Purchasing Mother of the Bride Outfits
The Mother of the Bride, traditionally, is to select her outfit prior to the Mother of the groom, giving her first choice of color. Depending on how formal the wedding is, the mother of the bride outfit should match the degree of formality. The time of day that the wedding is held will also determine the type of outfit that is considered acceptable. A knee length dress would be acceptable for a morning or afternoon wedding, but a long gown would be more appropriate for an evening wedding. There are also very nice pant suits with flowing pants that look more like a long skirt. The outfit selected by the Mother of the bride should never outshine the bride’s dress. A wedding is also not an occasion for the mother of the bride to “show what she’s got”, so to speak. An elegant, more conservative form of dressing is more appropriate.
The Challenge with Grandmother of the Bride Dresses
The Grandmother of the bride is as significant a person in the wedding as the Mother. In a lot of instances, the Grandmother is elderly, so it may be difficult for her to get out shopping for an appropriate outfit. Also, the selection of more formal apparel that is available for elderly women can be quite limited. The Grandmother is likely not willing to dress in something that doesn’t suit her age and “dressy” outfits aren’t readily available for the elderly at your local department store. In some case, it may be easier to have something made by a seamstress.
As you can see, it would seem that in the case of purchasing clothing to attend a wedding, it is easier for younger women than for the Mother of the bride. Elderly wedding outfits for the Grandmother of the bride seem to be even more of a challenge.
